Keller Is 1

My son had his first birthday party yesterday. People came out of the woodworks to bring toys, books, and all kinds of other little kid paraphernalia. There was so much of it that we had to load down the back of my truck. It was really great to see that many people there for his little shin-dig. And I made some killer home made ice cream, too. It was a hit. My mom made a cake shaped like a guitar and we sat Keller down in front of it, hoping he would just dig in and go crazy, but I guess he’s like me in that he doesn’t like to get dirty. What a weird kid.
And all of our friends had their babies there, too. Lots of little kids running everywhere. Check out the names on this bunch of boys: Keller, Sellers, Whit, Hudson, Judd, Brenden. That’s a cool sounding basketball team, or maybe even a band. They were all born within a year of each other, so they’ll grow up and play together and act stupid. I’m really excited to watch their little league teams and their Sunday School class.
Life is good.
No commentsThe Deuce Is Looser Than I Remember…
Tonight was a great night. Let me tell you all about it…
Former Alabama football star George Teague has a charity organization called Teague’s League. (You may remember Teague as the guy who ran down the Miami receiver and stripped the ball behind his back in the 1992 National Championship game, or as the dude who flattened Terrell Owens for dancing on the Dallas Cowboys’ star when he was a safety in the NFL.) Here’s what the organization does: they round up a bunch of old Alabama football players and put a basketball team together at a local school, where they face off against local “celebrities” (usually teachers and preachers and a couple of high school athletes) in a full 40 minute showdown. I was asked to play.
When I got there, David “The Deuce” Palmer (from the 1992 Nat’l Champs) grabbed me and brought me down to the locker room and gave me a jersey and asked me to play on their team, because a couple of their players had car trouble and weren’t gonna be able to make it. I was fired up, needless to say. Well, during warm-ups I was hitting EVERYTHING. It was great. When time came to tip-off, they put me in the starting line-up; Chris Anderson, Reggie Grimes, David Palmer, Kelvin Sigler, and Brandon McCaghren. And to make it even better, I led them in scoring. I played great. And my wife filmed it all. Got some pictures, too. They’re in my picture section. Check ‘em out. And after the game, a lot of the people in the stands even asked me to autograph their Alabama memorabilia. Maybe they thought I was the kicker…
All the guys were really cool, and they were fun. David Palmer was the only real basketball player of the bunch, but the other guys were pretty good, though. Long story short, we got beat 102-94. I swear the teachers hit 80% their shots. it was unbelievable. But I had an awesome time, and I wish my boys like Alan Compton and Brandon Denton that are huge Bama fans could have been there. Ya’ll would have loved it.
Proud Papa
I guess as a father, there are always moments that you look forward to; milestones in the life of your child. Yesterday I saw the reaching of what I consider to be a major milestone in the life of my son, Keller. He is 11 1/2 months old. He’ll be one year on April 19. It’s important to know his age, because he accomplished a feat yesterday that many teenagers in my youth group can’t even do: He caught a ball. That’s right. I threw a ball to him and he caught it. I was so excited that I yelled and scared him. When Lindsey got home, she inquired as to why I was so excited. I told her Keller caught the ball. She said, “Well, it was probably just an accident.” This hurt me deeply. How could you doubt the athletic prowess of my only begotten son, woman? So Keller and I set about to prove her wrong. I threw him 5. He dropped them all. But he caught number 6. And number 8. That’s right. 11 months old and he caught the ball 3 times.
