“Sex and the City” vs “Indiana Jones” (or “How America Turned Dumb”)

In a stunning turn of events, the new “Sex and the City” movie brought home $55.7 million over the weekend.

You are likely saying to yourself, “Brandon, how could you possibly care about this?” Normally, it wouldn’t even make a blip on my radar. But you see, this debacle pushed “Indiana Jones” into second place. Yes, “Indiana Jones” is losing to “Sex and the City.”

Gone are the days when heroes and action and big dreams ruled the silver screen. Heroes like Indiana Jones are soon to go the way of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. No, we don’t want heroes and adventure; we want girl talk and fashion sense.

Big deal, right? It’s a couple of movies, right? But what does this say about America? We have made a dramatic shift from being proud of our male characteristics and instincts to sweeping them underneath the proverbial rug. We have sought to feminize everything about our society and to dismiss anything that is inherently male as barbaric and rude and stupid. Masculinity is now a dirty word. Sarah Jessica Parker is more relevant than Harrison Ford and George Lucas. To paraphrase John Eldredge, we’ve traded William Wallace for Mother Theresa. I think I wanna die.

Yeah, Indy’s still in second place for now. But if his new movie were made 15 years from now, it might not break the top ten. Or 25 years from now, it might never be made at all.

Rest in peace, Indy.
