“Sex and the City” vs “Indiana Jones” (or “How America Turned Dumb”)

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

In a stunning turn of events, the new “Sex and the City” movie brought home $55.7 million over the weekend.

You are likely saying to yourself, “Brandon, how could you possibly care about this?” Normally, it wouldn’t even make a blip on my radar. But you see, this debacle pushed “Indiana Jones” into second place. Yes, “Indiana Jones” is losing to “Sex and the City.”

Gone are the days when heroes and action and big dreams ruled the silver screen. Heroes like Indiana Jones are soon to go the way of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. No, we don’t want heroes and adventure; we want girl talk and fashion sense.

Big deal, right? It’s a couple of movies, right? But what does this say about America? We have made a dramatic shift from being proud of our male characteristics and instincts to sweeping them underneath the proverbial rug. We have sought to feminize everything about our society and to dismiss anything that is inherently male as barbaric and rude and stupid. Masculinity is now a dirty word. Sarah Jessica Parker is more relevant than Harrison Ford and George Lucas. To paraphrase John Eldredge, we’ve traded William Wallace for Mother Theresa. I think I wanna die.

Yeah, Indy’s still in second place for now. But if his new movie were made 15 years from now, it might not break the top ten. Or 25 years from now, it might never be made at all.

Rest in peace, Indy.

Movies are only the “tip of the iceberg.” With the changes made to the military by Democrats in the 90’s followed by the way we let the glorious and wise media decide what we want and how we should get it. Our beloved country, culture and way of life have limited time left. We are weak, gluttonous, and oblivious to our own sinking demise. Anyone want to move away? I was thinking about the U.K.

look at the bright side: As most of the U.S. turns into creampuffs, We warriors can live with the knowledge that if things get really bad we can always kick their butt and take stuff. I know it sounds bad, but the truth hurts and so does a front kick to the groin.

I was having this conversation with a coworker just the other day. The discussion was based around the fact that I could not find one person to give me one redeeming quality about that movie…not one. And yet that movie rings of social commentary on todays pop culture. Paradox??? Only to someone who cares if you ask me.

Its just a movie, entertainment. I think the only reason why Sex and the City sold more its because the population of women is actually higher than men and people don’t really appreciate classics like Indiana Jones anymore, but i think you looked too much into it. Movie selling scores say nothing about a country, thats just dumb.

I agree with Robyn. “Sex and the City” sold more because it has an insane following. Women watched the show when it was on television four years ago, and now even more women watch it because of its syndication not only on TBS, but other channels as well.

As far as box office numbers reflecting a societal turn against masculinity, I’m thinking you’ve read into this a little too far. Men are just as manly as they always have been. They are just as “in control,” just as “forefront,” just as domineering. Especially within the church that you belong to, men run not only the household, but the church. It’s interesting to me that a member of the Church of Christ is complaining about men losing their status as “masculine figures” to the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and a new wave of feminism. I don’t mean feminism in the “we hate men” kind of way, but in a sense that women are now empowered to do and be all that they can. That may be what is actually bothering you - the rise of women’s independence. Masculinity is not demonized; rather, it is now simply equaled and paralleled by femininity.

If you haven’t already listened to it, you seem like they kind of person who’d enjoy Brad Paisley’s “I’m Still a Guy.” Check it out.

    I’ll second that.
