Old School Sweep

More from Eddie Bravo’s half-guard game. This time it’s a sweep called Old School. This is a great sweep from the half-guard that will help move you from laying on your back and praying into an offensive machine.
1. Execute the lockdown on your opponent’s right leg.
2. Perform the whip up.
3. While on your right side, reach through and grab the top of your opponent’s left foot.
4. Pull the foot towards you and drive your shoulder forward into your opponent, rolling him onto his back. Be sure to keep the Lockdown in place!
5. Pass into side mount and beat his head in.
If your opponent senses this coming, he’ll post his foot out and keep you from performing the sweep. That’s when you’ll wanna do a submission called The Electric Chair, which I’ll show you later.
The Whip Up
The Whip Up is another Eddie Bravo technique that works from the Half Guard. It is the gateway to getting into some sweeps and submissions from the half guard.
1. Execute the Lockdown on your opponent’s right leg.
2. Elevate opponent towards your head by lifting your legs and pushing on opponent’s hips simultaneously.
3. At the same time that you elevate your opponent, you should whip up to your right side and elbow.
This will bring you into a great position to start executing some sweeps and submissions from your half-guard.
The Lockdown
If you didn’t already know, I am a karate and jiu jitsu student under Jamie Webster in Decatur, AL. I’ve been keeping a journal of all the things I’ve been learning (whether in class or outside of class), and thought it might be kinda cool to post this stuff on my blog here. This way I can attach photos and maybe even videos for those of you who are interested, allowing you to learn some as well.
The first technique is gonna be from the half-guard and it’s called the Lockdown. It’s simply a way to hold onto your opponent and keep him from passing into a mounted or side mount position. I feel that it’s much stronger than traditional half-guard, as it opens the door to some actual offense, rather than simply trying to hold on and not get your guard passed.
THE LOCKDOWN
This is a technique that Eddie Bravo uses in his game.
1. From your back, trap your opponent’s right leg between your legs.
2. Step over opponent’s leg with your left leg.
3. Hook your left foot into the pit of your right knee.
4. Hook your right foot underneath your opponent’s right foot.
This adjustment to your half-guard will do wonders to help secure your opponent in place, even if it takes you a while to actually learn some offense from this point.
